The Retracing is a recreating of a memory image that Yang had after a hiking experience with James Benning—the pioneering filmmaker, also a faculty at CalArts—in a valley around Castaic Lake, California. Through the process, he incessantly struggles between a detail in his mind (the shadow on him) and the reality, and comes to the conclusion that the truth of that image can only be approached rather than discovered. Five inkjet prints are presented together with twenty-two pieces of paper that narrate the story.
