The Barefoot Man, 2023. Inkjet print. 101.5 × 127 cm
The Barefoot Man originates from a personal experience of me once wandering in the wilderness. In the picture, a man is sitting on a fallen tree trunk. His posture and expression implicate a sense of hesitation: Being aware that no one is around, he comes up with the idea of getting naked in nature. Yet his civilized size restrains himself from going further after taking off his shoes and socks. He would like to feel the ground with his feet, but at last can only step onto the shoes in an awkward, heel-lifted position since he is reluctant to get them dirty. The picture shows a moment when the civilized and the animal side collide within a human being.
